We, the undersigned, call on the elected officials of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its municipalities to end contracts with Hewlett-Packard (HP) until the company ends its corporate complicity in the Israeli occupation of Palestine, U.S. deportations, and mass incarceration.

    Why HP?

In 1970, the first successful consumer boycott against South African apartheid began in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Local chemist Caroline Hunter discovered that Polaroid profited from the passbooks that black South Africans were forced to show at checkpoints. She launched a campaign to boycott Polaroid, and by 1977, the company pulled out of South Africa.  Today, we have a chance to resist a modern Polaroid.

HP provides the technology the Israeli military needs to continue its occupation of Palestine and restrict the freedom of Palestinians, including the biometric data used in Israeli checkpoints on Palestinian land. In the US, it operates inmate data systems in prisons and works with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to speed up deportations. HP is also one of the world’s top military contractors.

HP holds a multi-million dollar contract with the state of Massachusetts to sell computers, printers, and servers to public institutions in the state.

By ending their contracts with HP, Massachusetts and its voters create an economic incentive for the corporate giant to end its complicity with institutionalized racism and violence.

    Report

On May 18, 2016, in Cambridge, MA, a new coalition called Massachusetts Against Hewlett Packard (HP) launched a campaign to end local and state spending on HP until the company agrees to end its corporate complicity in Israeli apartheid, U.S. deportations and mass incarceration. This report documents the rationale for the campaign, including HP’s record of corporate complicity in institutionalized racism and violence, as well as the details of HP’s local and state contracts. The report answers the following questions:

    1. Why boycott HP?

    2. Why focus on Massachusetts and on Cambridge?

    3. How will ending these contracts influence positive change?
